effects of caffeine on cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential: a pilot study
نویسندگان
چکیده
background and aim: caffeine at low doses blocks adenosine receptors. these receptors are present in all parts of the body including auditory and vestibular system. this study aimed to evaluate the effects of caffeine on cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cvemp). methods: in this interventional double-blind study, 40 cases (20 females and 20 males) aged 18-25 years were randomly assigned into two groups: the test group, 3 mg/kg caffeine and little sugar and dry milk in 100ml water, and the control group, placebo including sugar and dry milk in 100ml water. myogenic potential was recorded before and after intervention with 500 hz tone burst in 95 dbnhl. results: the statistical analysis revealed that there was no significant difference in p13 and n23 latency and amplitude asymmetry. however, the mean amplitudes of right ear (p=0.04) and two ears (p=0.02) of test group indicated a significant increase after caffeine ingestion. the results showed no significant difference in caffeine group compared to the placebo group in any of parameters and ears (p>0.05). conclusions: with current study small sample size we found no effect of 3 mg/kg dose of caffeine on cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential. although after intervention the significant increase in the amplitude of all samples was notable, no significant difference was found between the two groups. the present study was the first research in this area, however, larger sample size and different doses of caffeine is suggested for future studies.

INTRODUCTION Caffeine can be considered the most consumed drug by adults worldwide, and can be found in several foods, such as chocolate, coffee, tea, soda and others. Overall, caffeine in moderate doses, results in increased physical and intellectual productivity, increases the capacity of concentration and reduces the time of reaction to sensory stimuli. On the other hand, high doses can caus...
متن کاملCervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in multiple sclerosis participants
Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease that affects brain and spinal cord. The infratentorial region contains the cerebellum and brainstem. Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) are short-latency myogenic responses. Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) is a manifestation of vestibulocolic reflex and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic pote...
متن کاملVestibular evoked myogenic potentials in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune systemic disease. Most common autoimmune diseases are multisystem disorders that may also present with otological manifestations, and autoimmune inner ear disease accompanied by vestibular dysfunction. This study aimed to compare the vestibular function between RA patients and normal subjects using cervical vestibular evoked myogenic...
متن کاملEffect of Anesthetic Drugs on Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential Recording
The human saccule has preserved the ancestral ability to respond to high-intensity acoustic stimulations, generating a contraction reflex of the cervical tract muscles. Recording the muscular bioelectric potentials following saccular stimulation allows the evidence of the vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs). The aim of this study was to record VEMPs in alert and anesthetized guinea pi...
متن کاملInfluence of gender on the vestibular evoked myogenic potential.
UNLABELLED There is no consensus on the relevance of factors that influence gender differences in the behavior of muscles. Some studies have reported a relationship between muscle tension and amplitude of the vestibular evoked myogenic potential; others, that results depend on which muscles are studied or on how much load is applied. AIMS This study aims to compare vestibular evoked myogenic ...
